The afternoon sun blazed, a relentless eye watching him. He kept wiping his brow, even though he knew it wasn’t the heat. David kept finding himself staring at the gap between his house and the construction site.

He tried to distract himself by cleaning his already spotless car, running the rag over the metal, the motion too fast, too frenetic. Each time he wiped down the window, he saw his reflection—a stranger in his own yard.

He wanted to scream, to lash out at someone. He took a deep breath, and he forced himself to go inside, slamming the door behind him.
